Hi Everybody! It’s been
quite a while since I’ve sent out a newsletter, finally, here it is. We have had absolutely gorgeous weather this spring
(just a few snowy days thrown in for good measure). We are usually scrambling to get things done at the end of April and beginning
of May, but this year, it’s pretty much already done! We are way ahead on our
spring clean-up. Woohoo!!!
Most of the girls have kidded and we’re bottle feeding babies. My favorite part of the kidding
season is getting to see who has what and feeding those little gremlins! Also, speaking of kidding, I hope you are all following
my blog on Mother Earth News! You can read it by going to: www.motherearthnews.com/caprine-community
I have done quite a few posts on spring cleaning the goats, trimming udders, kidding, and etc., what to have on hand
and why, also, the actual birthing process. My most recent offering is on disbudding, don’t miss it.
Since I started doing this blog, I find that it’s
taking the place of some of the newsletters, so I won’t be filling up your in-box as often. I do encourage you to keep
track of the posts to keep up to date on all subjects “goat”!
UPCOMING EVENTS
SPRING GOAT SCHOOL! Saturday, June 2nd, and Sunday, June 3rd at Stony Knolls Farm in Saint Albans Maine. We will also be offering a Soap and Cheese Making Class on Monday, June 4th.
For the Spring Goat School registration form, click here. The Soap and Cheese class is filling up fast, so please email info@goatschool.com to make sure we have a spot for you!
Our guest speaker
will be Andrew Beals from Poulin Grain, his specialty is good goat nutrition. Andrew does a remarkable
segment on hay; its nutritional value and how to supplement with grain to keep your goats at optimum health. I can’t
even begin to tell you how much we’ve learned from this gentleman.
Something New & Different for
Fall Goat School
FALL GOAT SCHOOL! Saturday, October 6th, and Sunday, October 7th,
with a Soap and Cheese Class on Monday, October 8th.
If you have been to Goat School before and are
thinking about coming again, we think this new event will make Goat School even more fun!
“Farm to Table” events are becoming very popular across the United
States. The Farm to Table experience consists of a group of folks getting together to enjoy a freshly prepared
feast of locally grown and farm harvested offerings.
Stony Knolls Farm in conjunction with our Goat School weekend is planning on offering this treat at our Columbus Day
weekend Goat School on Saturday evening, October 6th, 2012.
The tentative menu will be a fresh, farm grown, grilled chicken half (grown right here at Stony Knolls).
Along with this will be a salad of fresh mixed greens topped off with Stony Knolls marinated feta cheese.
Baked potatoes smothered in garlic and onion chevre, sautéed young carrots cooked with fresh herbs and spices.
Our appetizer will consist of a variety of goat cheeses
and grilled breads. YUM!
Desert has yet
to be determined but we can guarantee it will be a fitting end to a scrumptious meal.
Oh yes, and….there will be entertainment! We have contracted
a five piece bluegrass band for a few hours of foot stomping and hand clapping. You can even dance if you
want to! Just what you need to settle a fantastic meal.
All this for the affordable price of $50.00 per person.
Not planning to come to Goat School, but want to join the fun? We’ll
have a separate sign up form so you can certainly come too!
New Cookbooks by Janice
So many of you are asking about recipes for the dishes they’ve had a Goat School, that I have decided
to write a series of “booklets”. The first one is finished and available, “My Little
Pickle Book”. All of the pickles you’ve had at Goat School plus a few farmers’ market
favorites are in this gem!
In another week
or so, “My Little Bread Book” will be ready for purchase
They will appear on the web site shortly so you can order them for $5.95 each, plus postage.
And, don’t forget “Goat School: A Master Class in Caprine Care and Cooking”.
Our Goat School Manual and Goat School: A Master Class are available in a package deal for $40!
The next newsletter will be available
mid-summer. Visit us on Facebook, just look for Goat School and we’ll let you know each and every
time a new post has been published on the Mother Earth News Caprine Community Blog.
